To Start A War by Robert Draper

After 9-11, the White House was totally spooked. They saw attacks under every bush – no pun intended.

This work outlines in the greatest detail the manifestations of this consternation as it relates to President Bush, and those close to him and their efforts to justify the invasion of Iraq.

In 1998, Paul Wolfowitz advocated the invasion of Iraq and all that this implies including seizing the oil fields. In 2001 he urged his plan on to President Bush. Britain, Europe and the Middle East were against it. It wasn’t hard to convince President Bush who had a pathological hatred of Saddam Hussein.

That broadly is the background of the book, the detail is in trying to convince the various agencies to agree to invade Iraq when there was no justification for doing so.

This is a very thorough book, exquisitely researched and detailed. There is none of the usual ‘nod -wink- and inuendo’ usually found in books concerned with politics. Nowhere will be found the usual “ … someone close to the President said …” “… a source connected to the committee stated …” etc.

In this book one gets the full chapter and verse – literally. Committees are named, principles are identified.

If you want to know why 4400 American lives were lost, and $2 trillion of your tax dollars as well as 300000 cases of PTSD – then read this book.
